Remembering the Charleston 7 Fallen in 1949

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The tragic Woolworth fire of 1949 as seen from the air! In the center, the seven-story Charleston National Bank is seen with heavy smoke. What is now the county library is seen and Summers Street is visible on the upper left with the Capitol Theatre — Jack’s Place — and the Kearse Theatre at the top. Note that Quarrier Street did not extend through to Summers. Words cannot describe the broken heart of the Capital City as the seven brave firefighters’ bodies were removed from the ruins.
